Sports massage therapy is an excellent way to keep your muscles healthy and active. Whether you are an athlete or just someone who works out on a regular basis, a sports massage will help improve your range of motion, decrease muscle spasms and improve circulation. A sports massage can also help prevent injuries and prepare your body for optimal performance. The benefits of sports massage therapy are many, including improvement of range of motion, decrease in muscle spasms, improved circulation, and enhanced flexibility.

Sports massage: how it is different?

Sports massage is a form of bodywork that focuses on improving athletic performance and recovery. It may be used to treat injury or soreness, or simply used as a preventative measure to enhance your health and well-being.

What’s the difference between a sports massage and a regular massage?

A regular massage focuses on relaxation, stress reduction, pain management, and overall well-being. Sports massages help promote healthy blood flow in muscles by manipulating tissue so it can heal properly. The goal of this type of treatment is to ensure you have enough energy for daily activities and exercise as well as to prepare you mentally for competition or training sessions with your coach!

Sports massage therapy is geared toward athletes of every kind, from world-class professionals to weekend joggers. The particulars of sports massage techniques are specific to the athlete's sport of choice. Focusing on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements.

There are many benefits to sports massage therapy, and those include:

  • Improvement of range of motion
  • Decrease in muscle spasms
  • Improved circulation (more blood flow)
  • Better blood flow and enhanced flexibility
  • Sports massage can prevent scar tissue from forming after an injury or help break down existing scar tissue as well as aid soft tissue healing process prior to surgery by increasing blood flow to the affected area.
  • Improved Range of Motion (ROM): Massage improves your ROM -- the amount your joints can move after an injury or surgery.

Massage also improves your ROM -- the amount your joints can move after an injury or surgery. Scar Tissue Formation: Sports massage can prevent scar tissue from forming after an injury or help break down existing scar tissue as well as aid the soft tissue healing process prior to surgery by increasing blood flow to the affected area.

There are two types of sports massages - Focused Deep Tissue Massage and Trigger Point therapy.

A trigger point is a spot within the skeletal muscle that causes pain in other parts of the body. This is often caused by adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) that block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation.

Trigger points are spots within skeletal muscle that cause pain in other parts of the body. They are caused by adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) that block circulation and cause pain, limited movement and inflammation. Trigger points can be felt as a hard knot in the muscle that moves when you apply pressure to it. You may also feel tenderness when you press on them with your finger or thumb.

Adhesions form when tissues become inflamed due to overuse or injury. The most common sites for adhesions are in muscles between bones and joints—for example, IT band syndrome or patellar tendonitis—and tendons around bony prominences such as collarbones or elbows (tennis elbow).

Techniques involved in sports massage

There are many techniques involved in sports massage, but they all share the same core principle: the goal is to increase blood flow and remove waste products from your muscles. Here are some of the most common methods used by sports massage therapists:

Stretching: This involves using a slow, gentle hold on a muscle as it lengthens over time. It's most effective when combined with other techniques like kneading or friction.

Sports massage involves the use of several different techniques including deep tissue massage on muscles that are tight due to overuse/strain or spasms/twisting; indirect work with pressure points on connective tissue (i.e., tendons); joint mobilization around restricted joints; stretching of ligaments with cross fiber friction; soft tissue mobilization by stretching or moving the skin over muscles through movements such as kneading strokes (petrissage), effleurage (stroking) or tapotement (rhythmic tapping).

Muscle Tightness & Injuries: Sports massage can be used as a means to enhance pre-event preparation and reduce recovery time for maximum performance during training or after an event. Athletes have discovered that specially designed sports massage promotes flexibility, reduces fatigue, improves endurance, helps prevent injuries and prepares their body and mind for optimal performance.

Who should get a sports massage and who should avoid it?

You should be getting a sports massage if you want to help your body recover from the rigors of exercise, or if you're recovering from an injury. Sports massages can also help with performance issues in athletes and non-athletes alike. But it's important to note that not everyone should get a sports massage—for example, people with heart conditions (including those who are taking blood thinners) or high blood pressure shouldn't seek treatment without first consulting their doctor. If your injuries are severe enough that you wouldn't be able to walk to the grocery store and carry your bags home, we recommend staying home and resting to avoid further inflammation. Please also avoid sports massage if you currently have a blood clot.

If you're unsure whether a sports massage is right for you, consult your primary care physician first and ask about his or her recommendations; most likely he or she will recommend against receiving one until after talking with your doctor about any pre-existing conditions.
