What Are Neck, Shoulder, And Back Massages?

Neck, shoulder, and back massages are a type of massage therapy that focuses specifically  on the upper body (neck, shoulders, and back). This therapy targets soft tissues and muscle groups in these areas to help ease stress and tension, promote blood circulation, and encourage relaxation, which in turn leads to improved overall health and well-being of a person.

This therapeutic massage is designed to target the areas of your body that are most prone to pain, tension and stress, leaving you feeling so much better.. What Is Usually Included In A Back Neck and Shoulder Massage?

Just as the name suggests, a Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage  includes  massage of the head (temples, crown, and scalp), neck (upper trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, and scalenes muscles), shoulders (rhomboids, deltoids, middle trapezius and rotator cuff muscles), back (quadratus lumborum, latissimus dorsi, and the erector spinae muscles), arms (triceps, biceps, coracobrachialis, brachialis, brachioradialis, and the extensor carpi radialis brevis muscles)and hands..It is entirely focused on the upper body.

Massage therapists will often use different techniques such as effleurage (long gliding strokes,), petrissage (kneading, repeated circular movements, cross fiber friction, , and tapotement (rapid and repeated striking of the body) to work the muscles in each of these areas, providing relief from tension and pain.

At PRESS, we offer Signature Massage (a blend of relaxing Swedish and orthopedic Deep Tissue massage therapy) that focuses on the head, neck, shoulders, arms, and back, to help release stress and tension from your upper body.

During this session, our highly trained massage therapists combine long gliding strokes (to improve blood circulation) with sustained pressure on muscle knots (to ease chronic pain and tightness), thus creating a perfect experience for total body relaxation!

How Long Does A Back, Neck, and Shoulder Session Last?

A Back, Neck, and Shoulder massage usually lasts for 60 minutes.

At PRESS, we offer two different Back, Neck, and Shoulder massage sessions: 60-minute and 90-minute, each 100% tailored to suit your individual needs. The length you choose will depend on how much time you have available as well as your goals for the massage.

The 60-minute session is perfect for those with a busy lifestyle who still want to enjoy the benefits of an effective massage (a quick pick-me-up). Our 90-minute session is ideal if you have more time to spare and want a more comprehensive massage experience.

However, no matter what massage you choose, our experienced therapists will give you an unforgettable session that leaves you feeling so much better! So don't worry, if you're short on time - a 60-minute massage can still do wonders for your body.

Why is focusing on Back, Neck, and Shoulders so  Important?

While massage therapy can feel indulgent, it is an important part of holistic health. Massage Therapy  can help with:

Neck Pain

Neck massage therapy helps eliminate tension and muscle spasms in and around the neck caused by stress, poor posture, and physical activities. In turn, this improves blood circulation and reduces the strain on your neck muscles.

With improved blood circulation, more oxygen and nutrients get delivered to your problem areas, helping them heal faster. This leads to better mobility and flexibility of the neck, thus reducing pain caused by chronic neck ailments.

Also, by loosening up the neck muscles, this helps reduce migraines and tension headaches.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder massage helps reduce tension and tightness in the shoulder muscles. Often, pain and discomfort around the shoulders result from tension build up due to long hours of work, poor posture, and stress. By stimulating blood circulation in the area, a shoulder massage can help relax tight muscles and relieve shoulder pain.

Also, with improved blood flow to the affected area, more oxygen and nutrients are delivered to problem areas, which promotes faster healing and reduces inflammation.

Back Pain

Back massage therapy helps reduce pain and discomfort caused by muscle strain or overuse. A muscle strain occurs when the muscle fibers are overstretched or torn due to activities like lifting heavy objects. This causes pain, swelling, and even immobility in the affected area.

Massage therapy helps reduce this discomfort by targeting areas of adhesions and tension

Massage therapy also helps loosen tight back muscles, thus improving flexibility and restoring mobility in the affected area.

Benefits Of a Back, Neck and Shoulder  Massage

Besides relieving pain and discomfort, Back, Neck, and Shoulder massage also has many other benefits. Regular sesions  can help:

Sore Muscle Recovery

Regular massages provide much-needed relief to your neck and shoulder muscles that are tight or strained from work or exercise. Massaging these areas increases blood circulation to the affected muscles.

Research has found this to be true, with one, in particular, finding that massage therapy helped attenuate inflammatory signaling after exercise-induced muscle damage.

Reduce Eye Strain And Migraine

Back, Neck and Shoulder massage can help reduce headaches, migraine, and even eye strain. The calming effects of a massage can help relieve tension, relax the muscles and improve blood flow in both your neck and head area. Many headaches are caused by trigger points in the neck and shoulders, and trigger point massage can help address these areas and reduce headaches.

One study found shoulder and neck massage therapy to be an effective treatment for migraine headache pain.

Release Endorphins

Endorphins are chemicals released by the brain that have a calming and mood-elevating effect. As blood flow is increased during the kneading and rubbing of the neck and shoulder muscles, the autonomic nervous system stimulates the release of more endorphins into the bloodstream. This provides an immediate feeling of relaxation and improved mood, which can have a lasting effect on your mental well-being.

Reduce Stress & Stress-Induced Anxiety

Stress can take a toll on our physical and mental health, but an effective massage can help alleviate stress and stress-induced anxiety. By releasing tension in the neck and shoulder muscles, massage therapy has been shown to reduce stress hormones in the body.

One study found massage therapy decreased cortisol levels and increased serotonin and dopamine levels in participants.3 These are the hormones associated with improved mood and relaxation, which can help reduce stress-induced anxiety.

Other Benefits

Other benefits of shoulder and neck massage include:

Improved Immune System Functioning

Massage therapy has been shown to increase the level of lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that support the immune system.

Better Sleep Quality

Regular massage treatments can help improve sleep quality by increasing the production of serotonin (a neurotransmitter in the brain). Serotonin communicates with the brain to promote the quality of your sleep (how well and how long you sleep).

Improved Posture

Massaging the neck and shoulder muscles helps release tension, improving your posture and even reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

What's The Best Massage Therapy For You?

Different massage techniques can be used to treat back, neck, and shoulder pain. However, the best massage for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences.

If you are dealing with chronic pain, a deep-tissue massage may be best. For relaxation and stress relief, a Swedish massage may be the right choice. Ultimately, you should consult with your massage therapist to determine the type of massage therapy that best addresses your needs.

At PRESS, we understand the importance of providing personalized massage treatments that meet your individual needs. Our therapists are trained in various techniques, including Swedish massage and deep-tissue therapy, and can help create a massage plan to best meet your specific needs.
